Sometimes there just aren’t words to express a feeling, a memory or a particular moment.
But there is paint
Moments that transcend mere words or pictures become complex associations gathered through all our senses. And for me painting is like music or dance, expressing something more visceral, more elemental, that would otherwise remain quiet, hidden within.
“’Your painting cheers me every time I walk towards it. In such a difficult world it is good to find something which reaches deeply inside.’”
My paintings are often built of many layers, adding and removing paint, ink and other media, exploring memories of favourite places and elemental experiences through the language of colour, contrast and texture.
I work from my studio in Warwickshire but parts of my soul are scattered along rugged coastal paths and the windy ridges of mountains and moors.
Perhaps because of this, my paintings often arrive at a ‘landscape’ - but not always; Occasionally they ‘contain’ life’s chaos, in vessels or geometric shapes and other times they allow for a sense of expansion, to rise above it.
